ISLANDS ON THE BENTOTA RIVER
A short drive from the main resort area of Bentota and we found ourselves at the tiny port for a river tour. We all hopped aboard a small motor boat, with a boat driver and personal guide and explored the islands on the Bentota river.
Through mangrove caves and under bridges.
We marveled at the wild black monkeys swinging from the branches above us and the chipmunks, squirrels, birds and fish around us.
We also spotted three monitor lizards!
Life on the islands is very simple. The local people fish for food and take fruits from the surrounding trees. Most of the people have their own small motor boat for getting from island to island, and even back to the main land for stores. Although there are 64 islands to visit, many of which are inhabited we only visited 20+. One small island (which has been mostly eroded) was once temple for the King of Sri Lanka.
Buddhist temple on the island, visited often by the surrounding island inhabitants, we were blessed by the Buddhist Priest whom had lived on the small island for the past 40 years!by
