TURTLE HATCHERY and BENTOTA INFO

Bentota is an area in Sri Lanka, south of Columbo. Many people western people decide to visit Bentota when in Sri Lanka to enjoy the beautiful beaches and river watersport activities. However the areas surrounding Bentota, in historical cultural terms are slim. There is a beautiful temple names the KHARDE VHARA  buddhist/hindi temple which boasts many elaborate brightly painted depictions and a giant Buddha idol. This is only a short tuk-tuk ride away from the majority of the resort hotels in the area. Bentota is not necessarily a place to visit if you are looking for guest houses and street food on a large scale. However there are many day excursions to be had from this hub.

TURTLE CONSERVATION:

After realizing the shocking ongoing decrease of Sea turtles in the world, a local man here in Sri Lanka set up the Bentota Sea Turtle Conservation Centres.

Fishermen on the beach here in Sri Lanka previously would sell turtle eggs to the local markets as a food source, now they sell the eggs to the hatchery where they may hatch safely under the protection of the centers beach area- they then spend two-three days of their life growing before they are released at night (a precaution against hungry birds) back into the sea.
