Last year four tourists were KILLED on this volcano due to an eruption, and now here we are… quad biking up it!
We had a pre dawn start this morning as we had to prepare for our ATV- All Teraine Vehical or.. Quad bike tour of Mount Mayon in Legazpi City. We were told the last “superstar” to visit this particular place was Zac Efron, and if its good enough for him, then its good enough for me!
We got a double Quad, under the deal that I drive one way & Miky can drive us back. As we set off at about 7am with our funny, short guide, Bon- I felt Mikhails grip tighten around my tummy, and he clung on like a baby monkey for the rest of the ride upwards to the first base of the volcano.
Through rivers, down hills, over rocks, through villagers stopping only for a pose, or to shoo a cow from the track. Now; I know that my main goal for this trip, on a bigger scale is to be closer to the earth, and riding a loud thudding, shaking, jerking quad bike breathing out strong, putrid petrol fumes and disturbing the stillness of the living nature around us is not the most conscious way to go. But.. and I know Im at risk of taking three steps back here. .. it really was so much fun!
About half an hour in to our ride, Bons quad stopped suddenly in the middle of a river! Miks jumped off to help him retrieve it (whilst I caught baby frogs in my gloved hand), but once the decision to leave it was made, I ended up with two boys on the back of my quad for the rest of the way up to the first camp. Which apparently was both a fabulous and rare spectacle for the topless village women, whom clapped and laughed upon sighting us! There were women farming a green leaf vegetable, and drying out the banana leaf “leather” featured in so many of Primark and New looks bags; and in many other affordable high street shops.
Cows and calfs dotted the journey, big eyelashes and silky skin, along with hundreds of tiny tiny tiny frogs! Once we reached “Base one” the lowest Base on the mountain, we trekked up a small but very steep lava trail. Where the last eruption of 2006 had ceased from firing its way down the mountainside . A high stack of magma rocks which wobbled tauntingly beneath our feet, threatening to snap an ankle with any sign of a wrong footing! We made it to the top safely, and as we have so many times in this city… marveled at the wondrous mountain. We used the helipad as a play ground, (once we had caught our breath) we contorted ourselves in illy constructed aeroplane shapes! Our guide informed us that in May 2013, just last year four Russian tourists were killed by the erupting volcano “just a small eruption” occurred as they peered over the perfectly formed crest.
Mikhail drove all three of us back down to the ATV office, he was a lot more cautious than me to begin with. Girly limp hands clutched tightly at the handle bars but once he had settled down a bit I jumped up on the back and we quickly went along. To be fair, he was a decent ride.
Adventurous and hilarious day, as usual with my Moo Moo.
